Social Institutions of the Family(Notes) Essay Example
Social Institutions of the Family(Notes) Essay The Social organization of the family There are different sorts of Caribbean family frames. The rise of the various sorts was to a great extent because of recorded impacts that shape Caribbean progress. Caribbean culture has developed into a cosmopolitan blend of various races and ethnic gatherings that build their existence in the Caribbean. This blend has brought about an exceptional social framework; plural, captivated, politicized, risky, yet at the same time some what manor society. This has affected the kind of nuclear families that rose in the district. The jobs desires via Caribbean culture of mother and father combined with the distinctive socialization of young men and young ladies have impacted the numerous basic manners by which families are manufactured and kept up in the Caribbean. This likewise influences issues identified with sexual orientation development in the family. The regularly expanding extent of matrifocal and customary law associations are results of history just as other social patterns that are both neighborhood and universal in scope. Family frames in the Caribbean A family can be characterized as a social unit of basic habitation including two grown-ups who are in a sexual relationship. Offspring of both of the grown-ups, from both, or who have been received additionally structure some portion of this nuclear family. The most mainstream family frames in the Caribbean are: â⬠¢ The family dependent on precedent-based law association (consensual living together) â⬠¢ The family unit â⬠¢ The family dependent on a meeting association (extra-private) â⬠¢ The matrifocal family â⬠¢ The more distant family â⬠¢ The East Indian family We will compose a custom paper test on Social Institutions of the Family(Notes) explicitly for you for just $16.38 $13.9/page Request now We will compose a custom article test on Social Institutions of the Family(Notes) explicitly for you FOR ONLY $16.38 $13.9/page Recruit Writer We will compose a custom article test on Social Institutions of the Family(Notes) explicitly for you FOR ONLY $16.38 $13.9/page Recruit Writer Other family types are kin families due to a great extent to relocation of guardians, and grandparent-headed families. What are the purposes behind the presence of the different family shapes in the area? A few scholars, for example, Melvilleà Herskovits (1958) trait the pervasiveness of specific sorts of Caribbean family structures to African culture and a portion of the social organizations and social elements of those social orders. The family unit The local unit of spouse, wife, and kid or youngsters is respected by numerous individuals in the Caribbean as the perfect family structure that appears ith the marriage of the accomplices. Anyway where the family unit was set up in the Caribbean, its reality as a little household unit didn't in every case keep going long, even among the center and high societies in these social orders. The family based a precedent-based law association The custom-based law association is another kind of local unit with indistinguishable essential conn ections from those in the family unit, that is, grown-ups are joined in a continuous bond however the bond did not depend on the family as steadfast concubinage (T. S Simey, 1946). To all plans and purposes the mates are focused on one another explicitly, they bring up kids in a steady relationship and the family capacities as a financial unit. In light of the commonness of this sort of association and the presence of the relationship that it brings into being on the introduction of kids, a few Caribbean governments have given legitimate acknowledgment to these associations. Caribbean nations, for example, Jamaica, Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago and Antigua have passed enactment that manages the offspring of such association authentic status as beneficiaries to family property. Precedent-based law associations have likewise been known to exist for a long time without people in the network staying alert that the association has not been made lawful with a wedding function. The family dependent on a meeting association A regular event in the Caribbean is the local unit of a lady and her kid or kids. In this family structure, the mother and her youngster or kids live independently yet might be visited now and again by a man with whom she shares a relationship like that of a life partner. The man could conceivably be the dad of the kid or youngsters. Frequently such a meeting association starts with a young lady being impregnated while as yet living in the family unit of her mom or guardians. RT. Smith (1956) in his work on low salary dark families in Guyana noticed the accompanying: ââ¬Å"It does nor using any and all means follow that a man will be relied upon to wed the young lady. He will unquestionably be required to help the kid in the event that he is capable, and he may proceed with his connection to the young lady and other youngsters be conceived. â⬠R. T. Smith (1956), The Negro Family in British Guiana p. 138. Smith further expressed that the relationship may inevitably prompt the foundation of a custom-based law association. The lady, so as to deal with herself and her kids, may then beginning a sexual relationship with another man and in this way may wind up having a few youngsters with various men. Money related weight and passionate strain of bringing up youngsters emerging from such associations can be very overpowering. The Matrifocal family In Caribbean culture, the matrifocal family is the term used to portray unit in which ladies are the point of convergence. You may likewise observe this type of family alluded to as the ââ¬Ëfemale headed householdââ¬â¢ in some writing. In this type of family grown-up guys are missing from the nuclear family or on the off chance that they are available their job in local schedules is peripheral. A lady is normally the leader of the family or nuclear family. This sort of family structure is so outfitted in light of the fact that force and authority will in general live in the female head. Be that as it may, there, are some local units where females are capable just for an everyday running of the undertakings of the family. Guys as sweethearts or siblings, or fathers of the youngsters might be the ones who settle on the essential choices about major money related endeavors or tutoring for the kids. Accordingly, nonappearance of a male head may not really mean nonattendance of male position. The East Indian Family The East Indian nuclear families whichâ are pervasive in Guyana and Trinidadâ and Tobago are likewise the aftereffect of estate society and the presentation of indentureshipâ at the finish of the bondage time frame. These nuclear families are on a level plane extendedâ as the East Indians try to keep up their feeling of network and connection bonds that are impacted by their religion. East Indians kept up, at first, the vast majority of their family customs. After some time, a portion of these conventions have been creolized while some have changed close by social changes being sought after in post-pilgrim Indian social orders. Endogamy despite everything continues just as certain types of flat family shapes. Nonetheless, these are changing as the solid conventions of provincial India lose their hold on some Indo-Caribbean social foundations. The development away from the more distant family by the more youthful age of East Indians will likewise influence other Indian establishments after some time. Why the assorted variety? Specialists have offered a wide scope of contentions concerning decent variety inside the family in the Caribbean. Three perspectives set forward: social maintenance, manor arrangement of subjugation and financial components and the way of life of neediness Cultural maintenance and family decent variety Melville Herskovits (1958) in The Myth of the Negro Past, was one of the first to follow the improvement of Caribbean families to the African inceptions of the slaves who to the Americas. Herskovits accepted that regardless of endeavors to strip African captives of their social legacy, the act of polygyny was held from African culture. Where polygyny existed, the essential unit for emotional holding and closeness was the mother and kid or kids. The spouse/father were to some degree minimal in this unit. Herskovits kept up that this example has persevered Caribbean culture and culture, particularly among lower class individuals of African plunge in the Caribbean. Ranch arrangement of subjugation M. G Smith (1962) composed that under manor subjection, stable families were not allow to create. Associations of whatever sort were regularly separated as slaves and were sold. The unit of mother and kid or kids was less inclined to be destroyed than the man/spouse/kids unit. Male slaves were additionally denied property and family rights, and an arrangement of female centeredness rose and created. Guys along these lines would in general be peripheral to nuclear families and this minimization from family implied that slave kids were property of white slave drivers. Financial elements and the way of life of neediness The defenders of this methodology including Oscar Lewis contend that destitution of low in come groups of African source in the Caribbean and the Americas keeps the guys from making the monetary commitments that they should and as an outcome the think that its hard to meet their family duties as spouses and fathers. Extra time, matrifocality turns into an acknowledged example of family living and family connections. It turns into an element of the subculture of destitution. Lewis led his investigation in the urban territories of Puerto Rico and Mexico. He contended that the nearness of matrifocality is transmitted starting with one age then onto the next. Further, the urban condition supports precarious family associations because of various financial factors, for example, joblessness and neediness. Guys will in general desert the home on account of failure to adequately do the provider job. The nonappearance of ordinary work that ladies are compelled to enter progressive associations with various guys so as to remain alive. Every male may father a kid or two preceding abandoning the lady and her family. Edith Clarke in her investigation ââ¬ËMy Mother Who Fathered Meââ¬â¢ shows the joined impacts of class and district/area on family frames. Clarkeââ¬â¢

11 Ways to Deal With Depression Symptoms Without Drugs
11 Ways to Deal With Depression Symptoms Without Drugs For many people dealing with depression, prescription medications can be wonder drugs. Antidepressants, especially the newer selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) like Prozac (fluoxetine) and Zoloft (sertraline) work all sorts of mood-lifting magic. They can have side effects, though, and theyre often theyre expensive, especially when health insurance coverage for mental illness is less than ideal. There are many ways to counter some of the symptoms of depression that dont involve prescription medications. If you have depression and would like to try handling it without drugs, or if youd like to supplement your antidepressant with other tactics, check out these alternatives and then talk to your doctor about which might make sense as part of your treatment regimen. Always take symptoms of depression seriously as depression doesnt just go away on its own. While there are many things you can do to support your mental health, dont try to just handle your symptoms alone. Talk to your doctor and discuss some of the self-help strategies that may support your treatment. Get More Sleep Sleep and mood go hand in hand. Get too little of the former and the latter is bound to flag (whether you have depression or not). Make sure you have what sleep experts call good sleep hygiene.?? This means you keep consistent bedtimes and wake-up times, your bedroom is set up for sound sleep (its dark, quiet, and uncluttered), you have a relaxing bedtime routine that doesnt involve sitting in front of a screen, and so on. The relationship between sleep and depression can be complex. Not only is poor sleep thought to contribute to the onset of depression, but depression may then cause low quality sleep. Whether you cant seem to get any sleep or cant seem to stop sleeping, there are steps you can take to try to improve the quality of your sleep. Have a consistent bedtime routine.Go to bed at the same time each night, and set an alarm so that you wake at the same time each morning.Give yourself a period to unwind before you go to bed; do something relaxing and avoid stressful tasks or thoughts.Turn off your devices and try reading a book for a few minutes. Also, try to spend a little time outside each day, even on days when you are tempted to draw the shades and hide indoors. Light plays an important role in regulating sleep cycles and circadian rhythms,?? so a lack of sunshine may be making it more difficult to sleep at night. Cut Back on Caffeine Coffee, tea, soda, and even chocolate are steeped in caffeine. Its fine to indulge in a reasonable amount of caffeine in the morning, but if you do, time your last hit of caffeine for no later than late afternoon so it doesnt interfere with sleep. If you do tend to rely on caffeine, try cutting back gradually in order to avoid unpleasant symptoms of caffeine withdrawal. Look for things you can replace your caffeine habit with. When you are craving a soda or cup of coffee, try going for a short walk around the block instead. What to Know About Caffeine Use Get More Vitamin D Theres some evidence that a deficiency of this important nutrient could play a role in depression.?? If you arent getting enough vitamin D through your diet and lifestyle (like sun exposure), ask your doctor if you should try taking a supplement. Certain nutrient deficiencies can play a role in depression symptoms. If you are having a difficult time spending enough time outdoors or if overcast weather conditions make it hard to get sunshine, a supplement may be useful. Go Natural For treating mild to moderate depression, dietary supplements such as St. Johns Wort, S-adenosylmethionine (SAM-e), and 5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) may be worth a try.?? Research has shown that St. Johns wort is more effective than a placebo at relieving symptoms in those with mild-to-moderate depression.?? Be careful with these substances though: Dont take any of them without checking with your doctor first. Just because theyre available without a prescription and are touted as natural doesnt mean theyre always safe. For example, mixing St. Johns wort with an SSRI such as Prozac can lead to a complication called serotonin syndrome.?? Tap Your Spirituality No need to join a church, synagogue, or mosque (although certainly for many people dealing with depression, religion can be an impactful source of support). But simple daily practices such as meditation or adding to a list of things youre grateful can help boost mood and overall well-being. Meditation can have a range of beneficial effects such as lowering stress levels and helping people to become more aware of their thoughts and reactions. Research indicates that an intervention called mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT), which combines elements of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) with components of mindfulness meditation, can be helpful in treating depression and preventing future relapses of depressive symptoms.?? Studies also suggest that different types of mindfulness meditative practices can also be effective in the treatment of depression.?? There are many different types of meditation, but you can get started with a simple meditative exercise: Sit comfortablyClose your eyesBreath naturallyFocus on how your body feels while you breatheWhen your mind wanders, redirect attention back to your breathing 8 Meditation Techniques to Try Get More Exercise This doesnt mean train for a marathon, but it does mean putting in a half-hour or so of low-intensity activity each day, which has been found to be effective in improving mood and quality of life.?? Even better, take it outdoors: Fresh air and sunshine are especially healing for folks dealing with a special form of depression known as seasonal affective disorder (SAD). While research has shown that regular physical activity can be effective in both the prevention and treatment of depression,?? it can be hard to start an exercise habit when youre depressed. Lack of energy and low mood may mean that you simply feel too fatigued to get up and get active. Some things that you can try to stick to your habit: Start small. Try walking for just a few minutes each day, then work on gradually increasing your walks.Remind yourself of the benefits. Getting started is tough, but doing it is something that will help you feel better in the long-term.Enlist a friend. Ask a loved one to walk with you or do another form of exercise at least a few times a week. Having the support of a friend can not only help get you into a routine, but it can also help you maintain those social connections when you are feeling down. How Physical Exercise Benefits Mental Health Avoid Alcohol Alcohol in and of itself is a depressant. Oddly enough, drinking can interfere with sleep, and quality sleep is a key to battling the blues. While alcohol might seem like a quick fix to escape what you are feeling, it can actually make many of the symptoms of depression feel much worse.?? Not only that, but it can decrease inhibitions and potentially lead to risky behaviors and bad decisions that can have long-term consequences. If youre taking any sort of antidepressant, you really shouldnt drink at all: Alcohol doesnt interact well with medication. If you have been misusing alcohol or other substances and need help quitting, talk to your doctor. You may also have an alcohol or substance use disorder as well. Withdrawal symptoms may temporarily worsen symptoms of depression, so you may need extra assistance as you go through this process. How Substance Use Can Lead to Mood Disorders Eat Good Mood Food What you put in your mouth can have a direct effect on how you think and feel. Make sure to eat a well-balanced diet, one thats rich in nutrients and low in saturated fat. A nutritionist or dietitian can help you analyze your eating habits and pinpoint potential nutrient deficiencies that could contribute to depression. Some foods that may be beneficial when you have depression: Probiotics: Research is increasingly pointing to a connection between gut and brain health.?? Foods high in probiotics include yogurt, kefir, kimchi, and kombucha.Fish: Research has found that people who ate a diet high in fish were less likely to have symptoms of depression.?? Fish are high in omega-3 fats, which play a role in helping neurotransmitters such as serotonin work in the brain.Nuts: Nuts are also a good source of omega-3 fats and one study indicated that people who ate walnuts were 26% less likely to have symptoms of depression.?? Foods to Help Fight Depression Change Your Thoughts Pollyanna-ish as it may sound, thinking good thoughts can help you feel good. Your thoughts truly do have a direct bearing on your mood. If youre struggling with negativity, consider seeing a therapist to help you learn ways to counter it. One of the most popular and effective treatments used in the treatment of depression is cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT).?? This form of psychotherapy focuses on identifying negative thinking patterns and then replacing them with more positive ones. Some ways that you can practice some of these ideas on your own. Learn to Recognize Negative Thinking Sometimes these thoughts can be obvious, such as times when you berate or criticize yourself. Other times, they can be more subtle. You might find yourself engaging in things like catastrophizing or all-or-nothing thinking. Catastrophizing involves always anticipating negative outcomes. All-or-nothing thinking means that you think of things as either successes or failures. Once you get better at recognizing these cognitive patterns, you can start working on some healthier replacements. Reframe Your Thoughts When you find yourself having a negative thought, consciously reframe it in a positive way. For example, you might replace something like This will never work with something more positive such as, Here are a few things that I can try that will help me get started. Shifting your focus to your strengths and abilities can help you maintain a more positive mindset. Tips for Changing Negative Thinking Get a Handle on Stress Stress can drive up levels of a brain chemical called cortisol, which has been found to be higher in folks with depression.?? With regular practice, you may be able to learn how to intentionally relax your body fairly quickly whenever you are feeling tense.?? Learning to manage your stress takes time and practice. Talk to your doctor or therapist about other strategies you might try to minimize the stress and your response to it. Stress Management Techniques for All Types of Stress Tend to Your Social Life When youre depressed, theres no reason to go it aloneâ"and all sorts of reasons to reach out to friends and family. Make plans with loved ones and keep those dates. Join a club or sign up for a group activity such as a local dodgeball league, for example, or a French class. Other things you might try: Schedule activities. Having routines can be helpful when you are going through depression. Create a daily schedule that includes spending time with others. You are more likely to stick to it if its a scheduled event.Volunteer. Joining a cause that you care about is a great way to meet new people and expand your social circle.Join a support group. Dysfunctional Organizations Are Like Dysfunctional Families Free Essays
Quality, timing, and cost will all usually be less favorable than planned. Projects will be routinely delayed, costs will routinely be revised upward, quality will be at risk of being forgotten in the quest for profitability and timeliness, products will be at risk of many and/or severe defects, and customer satisfaction will lag behind more capable and less dysfunctional competitors. Similarly, a dysfunctional family will have parallel problems with achieving its goals. We will write a custom essay sample on Dysfunctional Organizations Are Like Dysfunctional Families or any similar topic only for you Order Now An imbalance of power is a frequent cause of dysfunction in families. Imagine: a family with several children embarks on a big project, a trip to Ocracoke Island, for xample. If one child is more demanding, needy, or otherwise exceptional, and the family has developed a dysfunctional behavior pattern centered on that child, things will be disrupted and plans will not work out. The child may have to stop at every rest stop, and take a long time getting back into the car, delaying progress on the trip. The father may know the ferry schedule for getting to the island, and know when the family needs to be at the dock, but he may not be able to change the childââ¬â¢s behavior, nor the behavior of the mother who caters too much to the demanding child. Random and unanticipated delays caused by the child, who has no understanding of the constraints the father faces, make them late and they miss the ferry, incurring additional cost of a nightââ¬â¢s stay on the mainland. An imbalance of power is also a problem for large companies. I have worked for companies in which one top manager or one function, product styling, for example, can cause a nearly-perfect parallel to the dysfunctional family. The product styling group knows when they need to finish the design, but their Job is to make the product look attractive, and they have so any people involved, from multiple levels of the organization, that they canââ¬â¢t get it done on time. Top managers come through the studio to look at the new design, but, many having been engineers and designers in the past, they each see something they feel needs to be changed. Since they donââ¬â¢t come through the studio until the design is supposed to be nearly complete, their suggestions set back the design process, and the design is late. The engineers who have to integrate the design with functional parts are left to play ââ¬Å"catch-upâ⬠with their designs, involving late changes, vertime, and a huge amount of rework to recast financial fgures, get revised quotes from suppliers, re-time the plans, etc. , etc. The suppliers, too, have to change their plans and designs and renegotiate with their suppliers in turn, and are delayed as well. Packaging, marketing materials, sales and service training classes, and many other efforts are all set back. Even if top management is understanding and ââ¬Å"lets well takes saââ¬â¢. n. y management at the top, executives or parents, to limit dysfunctional behavior and keep things on track. In my five different careers I have seen this same asic pattern repeated over and over, becoming nothing more than the standard way of doing business for some organizations. The only mitigating force I know of is having really saââ¬â¢. . y upper management who understand how such things happen and are willing to actively work to avoid them. A smart top manager can rein in the overzealous designers, for example, and understand the principles of diminishing returns and the need to understand when ââ¬Å"roughly rightâ⬠is good enough. Similarly, the skilled parent can understand the problems caused by favoring one child over nother, and carefully manage the behavior of the individuals i n the family so that the familys overarching goals are met. Maybe itââ¬â¢s Just my experience, but I have seen that such skill and savvy are all too rare. Ethnic or national culture can be a significant factor in instances of dysfunction. Interestingly, management saââ¬â¢. n. y and parenting skill are heavily influenced by cultural factors. In Western cultures where there is a strong value placed on individuality, managers can acquire the ââ¬Å"gunslingerâ⬠mentality, which makes them think they have to do everything themselves and be the best at everything. With such managers collaboration and communication can suffer and, while they may be stars in their own right, the organization can suffer from the conflicts and snafus that will result. Similarly, in a strongly patriarchic culture, the father, feeling like he must be the all-knowing authority, may ignore the small child who hears the tire rumbling as it starts to go flat, and as a result miss the ferry due to a shredded tire and the time required to fix it. Organizations can become dysfunctional by promoting those who do extremely well. Some businesses promote engineers and designers who create great products to high level management ositions, and then some wonder why the organization does poorly. I have often noted that many engineers take this career direction because they donââ¬â¢t like dealing with people, and would rather ââ¬Å"stick their head in a machineâ⬠and make it work as nearly perfectly as possible than negotiate with other people. To take someone who, by their nature, hews to Jobs that avoid interaction with people and put them in a Job that requires excellent people skills is asking for trouble. They will not only be uncomfortable and unhappy, but they may not understand interpersonal and organizational behavior well, struggle, and not do a very good Job. At the same time, to go back to engineering would be a terrible demotion and pay cut, so they are stuck, often for decades, in a position for which they are only marginally suited. Many parents, like many executives, were never suited or well prepared for their roles. Similarly, many parents become that by accident, perhaps through lack of proper attention to contraception, or through social imperatives ââ¬â older family members who lobby hard for grandchildren, for example. Some parents had tough childhoods, for example, and never had the chance to witness good parenting as children, yet they ften find themselves responsible for a family with children and (perhaps) a spouse, and even elderly parents that need their care. In a society with little focus on or cultural knowledge around good parenting, they will be severely challenged to run a family effectively or avoid the mistakes that were perpetrated on them as children. Dysfunction tends to stick around and follow organizations and families. Thus, in creep in over time, and propagate forward from one generation or regime to the next. It is for this reason that sometimes a board of directors of a corporation will dismiss ot only a CEO but many of his reports as well, and bring in fresh management talent from outside the company to try to instill a new culture. While this is drastic and difficult in a business organization, it is even more difficult and disruptive to a family, and usually involves social service organizations and courts intervening in ways that may or may not produce better long term results for the family members. In both cases the situation must be extremely bad before such changes can be Justified, and a majority of such situations probably are never very well addressed. On Thursday Afternoon, I Went To Huntington Library With Thao And Jane
On Thursday afternoon, I went to Huntington Library with Thao and Jane. When we arrived at the library we found that there was exhibits on Jack London and George Washington. We bought the entry ticket, which was green, and went into the library. We started in the first exhibit on our right hand side. It was the exhibit on Jack London and George Washington. We started with Jack London first. Jack London was a famous writer as well as a adventurer. Throughout his life time, he had spent his short forty years writing fifty books, which would consist of novels, short story collections and notification works. He wrote the books wtih the adventure experiences that he had went through. He's most famous for the two books, White Fang and The Call of the Wild. While in his teen years, Jack London was forced to earn money to help support the household. Worked at a series of unskilled laboring jobs, he tried to escape because he was hungered for advenure and knowledge. He declared that college would slow down his learning and writing ability. Therefore, he had dropped out from University of California - Berkeley. He started his writing careers, and mailed all his works to publishers, but kept getting rejected. In summer of 1897, London escaped "work beast" in common labor, sailed for Juneau with his brother-in-law Jones H. Shepard, determined to strike rich in the Alaska Gold rush. During that time, he had wrttien The Call of the Wild (1903), and White Fang(1906). As a journalist, Jack London's hunger for adventure would always bring him to be happen at the center of an event, such as Russo - Japanese war in 1904. Jack London has once said. " I would rather be ashes than dust ! I would rather that my spark should burn out in a brilliant blaze than it should be stifled drypot. I would rather be a superb meteor, every atom of me in magnified glow, than a sleepy and permanent planet. The proper function of man is to live not to exist. I shall not waste my days in trying to prolong them. I shall use my time" This quote by London has shown that though London's life was short, but he had used his time wisely. Having gone through with so much adventures in his life, and gained knowledges from it, the fourty years that he had been living was worthwhile. In George Washington's exhibit, the museum has displayed many of the real documents which Washington has written, the gun that he has once used, forks he has once ate with, silver candlestick, oval silver tray, silver bottle stand, and etc. One interesting fact that I found was, Washington didn't have any children of his own, instead he and Martha Washington had raised two fatherless children at Mount Vernon and in the presidential Household in New York and Philadelphia. Washington also owned slaves, William Lee is Washington's personal slave, who accompanied him throughout the Revolution. His friend, Thomas Jefferson had said the following quote to show Washington's attitude when constitution was established "Washington often declared to me that he has considered our new constitution as an experiment on the particability of republican government, and with that dose of liberty man could be trusted for his own good." (Thomas Jefferson, 1814) George Washington's exhibit had given me a furthur step of understanding about him. While reading some of the early document, I found George Washington had a very nice handwriting! In the same exhibit toward the center was some artifacts from 1700's and 1800's. Some of the furnitures I saw, such as chairs, tables, are rather antique. The earliest artifact displayed is from 1455, which is a bible. Biblia Latina, Matinaz ("The Gutenberg Bible") It was the first substantial printed books, the "42 lined" Bible is generally thought to have been produced by Johnann Gutenberg in Mainz, Germany between 1452 and 1455. There are two volume work, however only one was displayed. While walking down the aisle, I saw many sculptures such as, "Boy with grapes and Girl with Doves" by Louis-Felix De La Rue(1731-1765). Three figures and figure groups by Etinne-Maurice Falconet. (1716-1791). The most interesting sculpture that I've found is called

Writing Medical School Application Essays
Writing Medical School Application Essays As Ive said before, writing medical school application essays is no easy task. That is why it is important to be good to yourself during the process. Unfortunately, too many med school applicants make the mistake of powering through their application essays in the hopes of getting the process over with. And while wanting to do this is certainly understandable, it doesnt usually yield good results. When writing your application essay, I can guarantee you are going to get frustrated (Lord knows that I did!). That being said, I recommend that you be kind to yourself. One trick that I found particularly interesting was writing whatever I felt like when I started to get frustrated. The following sentence, for instance, could have easily appeared in one of my initial drafts: For me, my desire to heal others through knowledge of medicine was a result of one particular incident as a child. I could elaborate on this experience but why bother? My head hurts, Im sick of writing, and if I have to write one more medical school application composition, I am going to use what little I do know about medicine to overdose on Tylenol. Clearly, the above example is not something anyone would want in their final draft. At the time, however, the humor helped me clear some of my writers block and got me back on track. So dont be so hard on yourself! The more fun you can have composing your medical school application essays, the easier they will be to write!

When Is the June SAT Should You Take It
When Is the June SAT Should You Take It SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips As some people are preparing for summer, others are preparing for the SAT. If youââ¬â¢re a junior thinking of taking the SAT before senior year, the June SAT can give you a chance to raise your scores and get a head start on the college application process. In this article, we'll tell you everything you need to know about the June SAT, including when it is, when its registration deadlines are, and when scores are expected to come out. Weââ¬â¢ll also give you a detailed list of the pros and cons of the June SAT to help you decide whether this test date is ultimately right for you. When Is the June SAT? Here is the schedule for the upcoming June SAT, with all of the critical dates you should know: Test Date Registration Deadline Late Registration Deadline Waitlist Deadline Deadline for Changes June 6, 2020 May 8, 2020 May 19, 2020 (by mail) or May 27, 2020 (online or by phone) June 1, 2020 May 27, 2020 Source: The College Board The June SAT is only available to those taking the exam in the U.S. For international test takers, the regular SAT will not be administered in June; however, SAT subject tests will be administered. To register for the June SAT, you must pay an SAT registration fee of either $64.50 (with the optional Essay) or $49.50 (without the Essay). The June SAT registration deadline is Friday, May 8, or about a month before the test. If you miss the June SAT registration deadline, you may still register for the exam as long as you do so by the late registration deadline, which is Wednesday, May 27. Late registration requires a late fee of $30 (in addition to the general registration fee). If you miss both the June SAT registration deadline and the late registration deadline, you may still be able to take the test by signing up for the SAT waitlist. Note that this does not guarantee you a spot on test day. The waitlist deadline is Monday, June 1- just five days before test day. If you are admitted on test day, you must pay a $53 waitlist fee. After the standby deadline has passed, you will not be able to register or get on the standby list for the June SAT. When Will June SAT Scores Be Available? Your June SAT scores will be available to you online beginning July 15. At that time, you may also access your scores by phone; however, this service costs $15 per call. Some test takers may receive their scores a little later due to processing delays, irregularities in test administrations, etc. So if you donââ¬â¢t get your scores right away, donââ¬â¢t freak out! Chances are the College Board is simply struggling to keep up. For updates on score delays, you can contact the College Board at 1 (866) 756-7346. Colleges you wrote in for your four free score reports will be sent your June SAT scores electronically within a week of you receiving your score. When your colleges actually receive and process your June SAT scores, however, ultimately depends on how quickly the College Board sends scores and how your colleges choose to process these scores. Some schools may not process SAT scores until a week after receiving them, so always gives your colleges ample time to process your SAT scores well before college application deadlines. Luckily, June SAT scores should face few, if any, difficulties getting to your colleges on time. Normally, we recommend taking the SAT no later than five weeks before your application deadlines (and no later than seven weeks before your deadlines if you think you'll need to order additional score reports). So for the June SAT, the earliest deadline you could theoretically work with would be around July 8. But summer deadlines are indubitably rare; in fact, the vast majority of U.S. college application deadlines are in late autumn and early winter. The most common regular decision deadline is January 1, and the most common early action/early decision deadlines are November 1 and 15. For schools offering rolling admissions, application season can start as early as September 1, with most priority deadlines falling around mid-autumn. So what does all of this mean for you? Your June SAT scores are essentially guaranteed to arrive well before your college applications are due, no matter where you apply or which decision plan you elect to do. Phew! Pros and Cons of Taking the June SAT Still deciding whether to take the June SAT? Here are some of the major pros and cons of the end-of-school-year testing session. ' Pros of Taking the June SAT June SAT scores will for sure arrive on time for regular decision and early action plans. Many students take the SAT at the beginning of senior year in a last-ditch effort to improve their SAT scores, but the October, November, and December test dates can't always guarantee your scores will arrive at your schools on time, especially if youââ¬â¢re applying early action. Because June SAT scores are sent out around mid-July, you can rest assured your schools will have plenty of time to process your scores. It allows you to get the SAT out of the way before starting your college applications. If you take the June SAT as a junior and do well on it, you wonââ¬â¢t have to take it again your senior year- and therefore wonââ¬â¢t have to deal with the stress of juggling both college apps and studying for an exam. It gives you more time and flexibility than other test dates. With the June SAT, you won't have to study during your (likely stressful) senior year; you'll also have the entire summer to study should you decide to retake the SAT in August or October. So compared to other test dates (namely those in August, October, November, and December), the June SAT offers far more flexibility, giving you a better chance of securing a high SAT score. Cons of Taking the June SAT Youââ¬â¢ll have to study for the SAT during finals and AP exams. Unfortunately, end-of-year tests are numerous- and squeezing in an SAT on top of this might end up burning you out. If youââ¬â¢re someone who gets easily overwhelmed or finds it challenging to study for multiple tests at once, opt for an earlier SAT test date in May or a later one in August or October. It may conflict with your SAT subject tests. Those who need to take SAT subject tests should do so in June, as you'll have just finished your AP courses and everything you learned will be fresh in your mind. Because you can't take both subject tests and the regular SAT on the same day, this means it'll be better for you to move the regular SAT to a different date. On a related note, if your SAT subject tests are only offered on the June date (i.e., youââ¬â¢re taking the German, Modern Hebrew, Latin, and/or Italian subject tests), youââ¬â¢ll have to take them in June no matter what! June SAT Recap This year's June SAT is scheduled for Saturday, June 6, 2020. The registration deadline is May 8, and the late registration deadline, as well as the deadline for changes, is May 27 (May 19 if registering by mail). The College Board will release June SAT scores to test takers starting July 15 and to schools within a week after that. Some schools may take up to a week to process SAT scores, but regardless your scores should make it to your schools well before any college application deadlines. To determine whether the June SAT is right for you, make sure you consider important factors such as your application deadlines, finals, AP exams, and SAT subject tests. Whatââ¬â¢s Next? Confucianism Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Confucianism - Essay Example Thus politeness being a universal communication phenomenon it reflects particular cultural values that come with or rather which are linked to diverse cultures. Being a relatively vital aspect in cross-cultural communication, politeness enables people from different cultures to establish, consolidate or maintain harmonious interpersonal relations that reduce misunderstandings and conflicts in the society. A snapshot on various aspects of politeness in the two cultures, Chinese and English, depicts that the rules of communication differ as they are influenced by the values and beliefs of individuals from these communities. For instance, the English people always address others according to their genders; Mr., Mrs., Miss and Ms, followed with a surname, depending on age and marital status. On the other hand, the Chinese address people using a surname and the title of the occupation; ââ¬Å"Wang yi shengâ⬠to mean Doctor Wang, ââ¬Å"Lee xiao zhangâ⬠to mean Principal Lee and ââ¬Å"shi fuâ⬠can be used to address strangers. In addition, the Chinese culture, especially for children, ââ¬Å"shushuâ⬠and ââ¬Å"a yiâ⬠are always used to address uncle and aunty respectively. Another aspect of politeness in the two cultures is farewell and greetings. Whenever the English people meet, they always use phrases like ââ¬Å"Nice to meet you,â⬠ââ¬Å"Good Morning,â⬠ââ¬Å"Good eveningâ⬠and ââ¬Å"Good afternoon.â⬠For the Chinese, the phrase ââ¬Å"ni haoâ⬠is always used whenever people meet. Moreover, when the China people meet their acquaintances, one can say ââ¬Å"qu na liâ⬠to ask where one is going or ââ¬Å"chi le ma?â⬠to ask whether one has eaten or not. Thus, whenever an native speaker of English hear the Chinese phrases, he or she might interpret them as invitation lunch or dinner and any other interference in their personal affair. I met one of my colleagues, an English speaker on my way to a restaurant. I was

What was the artistic ideology of the Bauhaus Assignment
What was the artistic ideology of the Bauhaus - Assignment Example According to the Bauhaus, art was supposed to bring creativity and modernity in modern architecture (Forgacs 197). This came in time when art and creativity in Germany has been overly suppressed by the previous leadership regime claiming that art in modern architecture was a form of communism. Bauhauââ¬â¢s idea was that art should be helpful to the society in all aspects including architecture. The ideology was that architecture could be approached from an artistic direction such that the resultant architectural designs would represent modernity and most importantly, be a tool of making more meaningful and useful buildings. However, the politics of constructivism, modernism were, evidently, behind Bauhaus conceptions of art and architecture. Bauhaus strongly argued that Bauhaus was apolitical in nature. However, the ideology came at a time when German was undergoing constructivism and modernism. These two functions were politically driven since the ideologies of German leadership at the time determined the future of Germany through supporting or suppressing such ideologies. Therefore, the desire of Bauhaus to shape the future of German architecture through art was based on politics of constructivism and modernism. Sadly, Bauhaus had to close down its Berlin institute in April 1933 following pressure from Nazi regime. Actually, the pressure for demobilization of Bauhaus began before even the Nazi regime came to power. They accused Bauhaus of ââ¬Å"Un-Germanâ⬠approach to architecture and made claims of negative influence from the western nations. How did the World War One and its aftermath (inflation, rise of political extremism, etc) influence the artistic production of artists such as Otto Dix, Max Beckmann, George Grosz and Laszio Moholy-Nagy? Interestingly, most of the German artists who were active after World War One were influenced by the war to express their ideas through art. For instance, Otto Dix was actively involved in World War One and was greatly affected by the war. Otto Dix, Max Beckmann, George Grosz and Laszio Moholy-Nagy had one thing in common in that they all had ideologies that contradicted the ideologies of the Nazi regime. Therefore, their art of expressionism faced political extremism to the extent that some of them had to either quit their art or change it to a more favorable art depending on the political climate. For instance, Dix was branded a degenerate artist as was barred from producing art of expressionism against the ruling regime. These artists had to reduce their level of criticism of the Nazi ideologies. Dix's work including ââ¬Å"The Trenchà andà War cripplesâ⬠were destroyed by the Nazi regime. Likewise, over 500 artwork pieces belonging to Max Beckmann were impounded during Hitlerââ¬â¢s regime through claims of degenerate art. Laszio Moholy-Nagy felt the pinch of political extremism when Bauhaus was overly criticized and suppressed. Whereas inflation affected virtually everybod y in Germany, artistic productions were also affected. The most affected artists were George Grosz, Laszio Moholy-Nagy and other artists who were part of Bauhaus. Whereas modern and artistic architecture required heavy capital investment, funds became unavailable during the aftermath of World War One. Cost of production of artwork became high and therefore, the artists found it difficult to keep producing large volume of artwork during the inflation period. What is ââ¬Å"Dadaâ⬠and how did it both influence and reflect the Berlin of the 1920ââ¬â¢s? Dada refers to an artistic and literary transformation that began during World War One. At the time, Switzerland being a neutral country acted as a safe haven for artists, intellectuals, and writers.

Gene Therapy and Its Effect on Cancer Essay -- Science Genetics Techno
Gene Therapy and Its Effect on Cancer The era of scientific advancement in the twentieth century has encouraged several scientific fields to merge into a new, futuristic science called Biotechnology. One idea behind Biotechnical science is taking advantage of molecular biology. At the forefront of this advancement is gene therapy which " attempts to treat disease at its origin on the molecular level"(Kreeger,1996). "Essentially, this therapy deliberately introduces genes into the human cells to compensate for aberrant genes that cause genetic disease" (Beese, 1996). This therapy can be administered in two ways. One is germ-line therapy which not only treats the cells of that individual but these treated cells could be passed onto the individual's offspring. This type is the focus of much of the opposition of gene therapy itself because trials take many years and few results have proved conclusively safe for those treated and their children. The other type of therapy less opposed is the somatic cell approach that only aff ects the cells of the individual being treated. Cancer has recently been the target for several different types of somatic cell therapy and along with them come a set of controversial aspects that question its role in society. Cancer is an ever- increasing disease that affects all ages, sex and race. It has no preference for where it resides as it can be found in several organs and on several different tissues. However, one special similarity appears whether the cancer is found on the breast or in the colon; it is an over growth of cells in the area infected. The cancer seem to arise from abnormalities in genes involved in growth and differentiation of cells. Certainly, environmental factors can indeed c... ....jp/~macer/Papers/PLSUBG.html March of Dimes. Bandwagon and Snob Effect
Write an essay on topic ââ¬Å"Bandwagon and Snob Effectâ⬠. Find an example for both effects, describe situation and explain reasons for such effects. In The Theory of Consumersââ¬â¢ Demand, there are three importants and different items: the Bandwagon , Snob and Veblen Effects. Today we will discuss just about the Bandwagon and Snob Effect. Faced with a new need, the consumer is confronted with a choice: to purchase or not this good or service, depending on its value, its usefulness, its attributes and operation consequences. But consumer choice will also be affected by his social environment. Specifically, scarce products are generally deemed valuable, independent of the utility that their attributes deliver. This effect has been found in several studies, and we can identify two distinct routes through which scarcity can increase product choice. A personââ¬â¢s demand may be affected by the number of other people who have purchased the good. If this is the case, a network externality exists and can be positive or negatives.A positive network externality exists if the quantity of a good demanded by a consumer increases in response to an increase in purchases by other consumers. And negative network are just the opposite. * The first way examines scarcity due to high demand. Consumers see that others have bought the product, and this may induce them to follow that behavior. Consumers may also extract information about the value of a product from the buying behavior of others. When consumers are unsure about the value of products, information on the valuation of others can help refine their own valuations. Therefore, scarcity due to excess demand increases inferences of product popularity and quality. This is the bandwagon effect, the desire to be in style, to have a good because almost everyone else has it, or to indulge in a fad. This is the major objective of marketing and advertising campaigns ( cf toys, clothes .. ) For example, the influence of foo tball players on the young men ( shoes, haircut, attitude ). * If the network externality is negative, a snob effects exists. The econd route concerns scarcity due to insufficient supply, where product exclusiveness leads to generalization of product quality. Consumers value the exclusivity of possessing rare products, and may see these products as a means to emphasize their uniqueness. Being one of the few who own a particular product may increase the product utility. It refers to the desire to own exclusive or unique goods. The quantity demanded of a ââ¬Å"snobâ⬠good is higher the fewer the people who own it. For instance, the luxury goods as Rolex watches and long lines at the ski lift.To finish, we can say that the bandwagon and snob effects are two opposites cases , the first refer to the extent to which the demand for a commodity is increased due to the fact that others are also consuming the same commodity. In this case, we appear to be ââ¬Å"one of the boys. â⬠This is some form of integration and sociability And the second effect refer to the extent to which the demand for a consumers' good is decreased owing to the fact that others are also consuming the same commodity, so this represents the desire of people to be exclusive, but it can be dangerous to the person, since it is a kind of isolation.

Amish Cultural Beliefs - 1049 Words
Amish Cultural and Religious Beliefs Impacting Health Care Trends Walking into an Amish community is like taking a trip through time. They are a religious group that has upheld the standards of a life far removed from the modern world. The Amish come from descendants from German speaking nations in and around Europe (Henderson, 2010). As such, church hymns and other important documents are written in a type of Germanic language, known sometimes as Pennsylvania Dutch. German and Pennsylvania Dutch are still common methods for formal communication within the Amish community, although most of its members speak English in informal situations. The community also upholds social roles that many would find outdated. Women are restricted to the household, and thus their roles are severely limited compared to women in modern communities. It is the men that have more freedom within the community. Also, many within the Amish community tend to take the view point that everything happens for a reason. This then impacts their overall view of individual health an d tragedies. When an individual gets sick or dies, many within the community believe it was Gods will, and so often not much is done to prevent Gods will from manifesting (Henderson, 2010). Thus, it is clear that their cultural and religious beliefs impact their overall health. The Amish extreme views and beliefs often keep them separate from the rest of society, which can have an impact on their overall health and how theyShow MoreRelatedEssay on Pre and Postnatal Care for the Amish950 Words à |à 4 PagesPrenatal Amish view pregnancy and childbirth as normal biological functions of the female body, however; due to their cultural beliefs they will not seek out prenatal care until late in their pregnancy, if no problems arise.
